Details Are Below
California Students United has reviewed the side letter agreement between UTLA and LAUSD for the return to traditional instruction for the 2021-2022 school year. For parents who wish to stay informed, below is what it includes and CSU’s stance on each important issue.
However, the agreement lacks specifics for the highest impact issues, for example:
-
A seat at the table for parents to represent the students of LAUSD and a student’s right to a high quality education.
-
A spending plan for the unprecedented $5B in additional funds being given to LAUSD this year. LAUSD budget for 2021-2022 school year is $13.8B, a >60% increase from last year.
-
How will the money be spent?
-
What accountability measures will we use to ensure students recover and excel?
-
What transparency will be provided to parents?
-
-
Plan to address learning loss from the 2020-2021 academic year.
-
A commitment to student development or improvement in academic achievement.
Additionally, CSU believes the sideletter missed the mark on covering safety and that resources are not being used wisely. The focus is not on student safety, achievement and recovery, where it should be. It is on teacher job protections, pay increases and unilaterally determined safety requirements.
